What is the Difference Between PLA and ABS?

2026-01-07

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a widely used, opaque engineering thermoplastic known for its strength and impact resistance. PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a bio-based, biodegradable polymer often derived from renewable resources like corn starch. Key practical differences for users include: PLA emits virtually no odor during printing, whereas ABS produces a noticeable, pungent smell. PLA produces models with a higher natural gloss, while ABS has a more matte finish. PLA prints at a significantly lower temperature (approx. 20°C lower), saving energy. From an environmental perspective, both can be eco-friendly, but PLA holds an advantage due to its bio-based origin and biodegradability under specific conditions. PLA is generally considered easier to print with, having less warping. However, a major drawback of PLA is its lower strength and heat resistance compared to the more durable and thermally stable ABS.
