About PEI Recycled Material / Off-Grade PEI Granule

2025-12-15

Polyetherimide (PEI) is a high-performance, amorphous thermoplastic known for its exceptional thermal stability, mechanical strength, and flame resistance. Recycled PEI or off-grade PEI granules refer to material that has undergone previous processing (post-industrial regrind) or does not meet the primary specification for virgin resin but retains a significant portion of its valuable properties. Using such materials can offer substantial cost savings in non-critical applications while promoting sustainability.

Key Advantages of PEI Material (Retained in Quality Recycled Grades):

  • Extreme Heat Resistance: PEI has a glass transition temperature (Tg) of approximately 217°C. It can be used continuously from -160°C to 170°C, with short-term peaks up to 200°C. It inherently achieves a UL94 V-0 flame rating without additives.
  • Outstanding Mechanical Properties: It maintains high strength, stiffness, and creep resistance across its entire temperature range.
  • Excellent Dimensional Stability: It exhibits low moisture absorption and a low, predictable coefficient of thermal expansion.
  • Inherent Purity and Stability: PEI is resistant to a wide range of chemicals, does not release volatile organic compounds, and can withstand repeated sterilization by steam autoclave, ethylene oxide (EtO), and gamma radiation.
  • Good Electrical Properties: It has stable dielectric properties over a wide frequency and temperature range.

Applications for Recycled/Off-Grade PEI:

  • These materials are suitable for applications where the ultra-high purity and guaranteed traceability of virgin PEI are not strictly required, but high performance is still needed. Potential uses include:
  • Industrial Components: Non-critical gears, bushings, bearing cages, and insulating spacers.
  • Tooling and Prototyping: For jigs, fixtures, and high-temperature support structures in manufacturing.
  • Internal/Structural Parts: Components where surface finish or color is not a priority, such as internal brackets, housings for non-medical equipment, or layers in composite structures.
