Flame-retardant (FR) plastic materials play a critical role in electrical applications where fire safety is paramount, preventing ignition and enabling self-extinguishing properties. When comparing FR ABS and FR PC/ABS alloy, several key differences emerge that influence material selection.

 

 

Regarding combustion performance, FR ABS typically achieves a V-0 flame retardancy rating at 2.5mm thickness, while FR PC/ABS alloy can achieve the same rating at just 1.5mm thickness, demonstrating superior flame retardancy efficiency in thinner sections.

 

Significant differences exist in processing characteristics. During manufacturing, FR ABS tends to generate substantial smoke emission, which presents health concerns and environmental challenges. Additionally, the flame retardants in FR ABS can produce acidic gases that corrode injection molding machine screws and molds over time. In contrast, FR PC/ABS alloys offer more stable processing with reduced smoke generation and less corrosive byproducts.

 

 

Mechanical performance comparisons reveal that FR PC/ABS alloy possesses notably higher tensile strength and impact strength compared to FR ABS, providing enhanced durability and structural integrity in the final application.
