Key Properties of PBT Material

2025-11-19
Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic distinguished by a unique set of properties that make it suitable for a wide array of applications. Its most notable characteristics include very low moisture absorption, which translates into excellent dimensional stability in humid environments. It exhibits outstanding thermal and color stability, combined with high stiffness, surface hardness, and good mechanical strength. PBT also offers high wear resistance with a low coefficient of friction, good resistance to creep and fatigue, and stable electrical insulating properties. It demonstrates very good chemical resistance and can be easily formulated with excellent flammability characteristics (UL94 V-0). Furthermore, PBT possesses excellent flow properties during processing, resulting in fast molding cycles and very good surface finish on final parts.

When compared to Polyamide (PA or Nylon) in flame-retardant and glass-fiber reinforced grades, PBT often presents several distinct advantages. These include better cost-effectiveness, higher flowability for filling complex molds, faster cycling times for increased productivity, and lower overall processing costs. Critically, its electrical properties remain consistent regardless of humidity, thanks to its low moisture absorption. It also offers superior color stability at high temperatures, excellent flame resistivity, and typically provides a better surface gloss and appearance.
